Everything You Want to Know Before Your First Night at Replay Lounge
Heading to Replay Lounge for the first time? You’re walking into one of Lawrence’s most-loved dive bars, and unlike a lot of newer Mass Street spots, Replay doesn’t go out of its way to explain itself. So here are the questions first-timers ask us most often, answered straight.
1. Where exactly is Replay Lounge?
946 Massachusetts Street, Lawrence, KS. Right in the heart of downtown, on the same block as several other bars and restaurants. If you’ve walked Mass Street at all, you’ve walked past it.
2. Is there a cover charge?
Most nights, no. On nights with booked live music, there’s typically a small cover that varies by show. Cover (when there is one) is usually collected at the door and is meant to go to the touring or local artist playing that night.
3. What’s the age limit?
21+. Bring a valid ID. Replay is a bar first and a music venue second, so the door policy doesn’t flex the way some all-ages-show venues’ do.
4. Is the back patio actually as good as everyone says?
Yes. It’s one of the best outdoor hangs in Lawrence — strung lights, mismatched seating, pinball and classic arcade machines along one side, plenty of room to spread out. In good weather it’s the reason a “quick drink” turns into three hours.
5. Do they really have arcade games?
They really do. Pinball machines, classic cabinet games, the works. Bring quarters or a small stack of bills — the games are a genuine draw, not a decoration.
6. What kind of music do they book?
Local and regional acts make up most of the calendar, with a strong indie / punk / experimental / lo-fi lean. Touring bands on smaller circuits stop through regularly. If you want to hear a Lawrence band before they’re big — Replay is where you do that.
7. How loud does it get?
On a show night, the front room gets loud — the stage is close to the bar and the room is intimate. If you want to talk, head to the back patio. On a non-show night the volume is normal-bar-conversation level.
8. Is there food?
Replay isn’t a food bar. Eat before or grab something elsewhere on Mass Street — you’re within a block of plenty of options.
9. What’s parking like?
Mass Street parking. Metered street spots and several public garages within a 2-3 block walk. On weekend nights, plan on parking a block or two off Mass and walking in. Meters are typically free after a certain hour — check the meter for current rules.
10. Cash or card?
Cards are typically accepted, but Replay leans dive-bar-traditional. Bring cash for the arcade games and for tipping the bartender — both are appreciated.
11. Will it be busy?
Depends on the night. Thursday through Saturday nights — especially when KU is in session and there’s a show booked — Replay fills up by 10 or 11 PM and stays full until close. Earlier in the week or earlier in the evening, it’s relaxed enough to get a real conversation in.
12. What time do they close?
Closing time follows standard Kansas bar hours. If you want to keep going past last call on Mass Street, the late-night Lawrence crowd typically heads east of town to The Outhouse, which runs to 4 AM Wednesday through Saturday.
13. Can I just stop in for one drink?
Absolutely. Replay is one of the few Mass Street bars where solo-drinking-at-the-bar is normal and not weird. Sit, order, take in the room.
14. Is it dog-friendly?
Patio dogs are a Replay tradition. Policies can shift seasonally and on show nights, so if you’re bringing a dog, ask the bartender on the way in.
15. I’m not into dive bars. Will I like it?
Maybe. Replay is dim, loud-when-the-bands-play, and unbothered with looking polished. That’s the appeal for some people and a dealbreaker for others. If you want crystal chandeliers and a 14-ingredient cocktail menu, Mass Street has those bars too — walk one block in either direction. If you want a real, lived-in Lawrence night, sit down at Replay.
